FOUNDING & COMMUNITY SERVICE

Haliburton School of the Arts, Fleming College

Carole Finn was one of five people ( Management Committee) involved in the early development of the Haliburton School of the Arts, now Fleming College's Haliburton School of Art + Design. What began for Finn as a community effort in the 1960s became a volunteer commitment that continued for nearly 50 years.

Over those years, Finn served the school and college in many capacities, including eight years on the Board of Governors of Sir Sandford Fleming College (1981–1989). She also worked in fundraising and community development, later chairing the campaign supporting the creation of the permanent Haliburton campus.

The work was entirely voluntary, but often demanded the hours and responsibilities of a full-time position. For Finn, it grew from a simple belief in the importance of making serious arts education available within the Haliburton community.

Rails’ End Gallery and Community Arts

Carole Finn founded and organized the Haliburton Highlands Guild of Fine Arts and was a founder and first curator of Rails End Gallery. In 1979, the Guild approved a plan to help transform Haliburton's closing CNR railway station into a permanent community art gallery. Funds the Guild had accumulated through its summer art exhibitions were redirected to the project and combined with government and municipal support. Rails End Gallery opened in 1980, giving the Guild a permanent home and the community a dedicated centre for exhibitions and visual arts activities. Finn continued to contribute as a volunteer, curator, board member and fundraiser and was named 1979 Highlander of the Year by the Haliburton Chamber of Commerce in recognition of her community service.
